Dena was a busy midwife trapped on the hamster wheel of working motherhood. Adam was an eccentric Buddhist yogi passing as a hard-working dad. Bella was fourteen and wanted to be normal. Sophia was up for anything that involved skipping school. Together, they shouldered backpacks, walked away from their California life of all-night births, carpool schedules, and Cal Skate, and criss-crossed India and Nepal for eight months―a journey that led them to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the tree where the Buddha sat, and the arms of Amma the Divine Mother. From the banks of the Ganges to the Himalayan roof of the world, this enthralling memoir is an unforgettable odyssey, a moving meditation on modern family life, and a spiritual quest, written with humor and honesty―and filled with love and awe.

  • I was unexpectedly spellbound throughout this entire story. I loved joining the Moes family on their trip to India and Nepal. The author consistently and skillfully hit the bull's eye with just enough description of their surroundings, very interesting mini history lessons, captivating family dynamics, and important spiritual and emotional awakenings. I am now a fan of the entire family. What a wonderful and enriching read!
  • Just finished this debut memoir, The Buddha Sat Right Here. It chronicles the author's eight-month journey to sacred sites in India and Nepal with her husband and their two school-age daughters. It's a spiritual quest, a travel memoir, as well as an honest and unflinching look at marriage and intimacy. I couldn't put it down. The beautiful cover and
interior book design add additional harmony to the reading experience. I know I'll never take a trip like this, but now I feel like I've nearly had the experience. Highly recommended.
  • I feel as if I travelled along with the Moes family on their eight month journey as they made their way through crowded, chaotic streets of India to ancient mountain retreats of Nepal. While they were hugged by Amma and felt the infinite love of the Dalai Lama, their journey was no picnic, but rife with bouts of illness and family disagreements, and lacking the most basic comforts of home. Capturing the grit, grime, and glory of this complex culture, Dena Moes writes with honesty, tenderness, and humor about herself, her husband, and her two daughters, as they each follow their own path to both spiritual and personal growth. I highly recommend this unique and charming travel memoir.
  • Dena Moes has a gift of story telling. From the very beginning the book draws you in & keeps you entertained. She is honest, bright & insightful. She made India come alive for me with her vivid tales of her family's adventures & mishaps. I highly recommend this book for all ages & sexes. There is something that touches the heart but at the same time educational for everyone. I really did not want it to end & it will sit on our coffee table so that I can go back & read it over &over.
  • The Buddha Sat Right Here is an adventure for the senses. Dena packs us into her backpack and takes us through India. Reading the book I can feel the cramped quarters on the train, smell India, taste the food, I am moved by her vibrant descriptions of all she takes in and experiences. I laugh as I relate to her Jewish Guilt Mother ( I have a Catholic one ) and cry at the honesty she portrays when speaking so intimately and of her relationships. I now officially want to travel to India (maybe NOT family in tow 0) and look forward to watching Denas journey unfold as a new author!
  • I enjoyed reading this book so much! As a midwife and a mother I could totally relate to all of the complexities of the author’s life. She spoke so intimately of the internal struggles of being a working mother and wife. She is a great writer and I found myself laughing and enjoying this adventure so much! What a beautiful family!
  • This book is a fantastic, searingly honest, magical, adventurous romp through the eyes of a humorous and sensitive family.
Dena Moes shares with the reader her loving depiction of traveling with her family, through thick and thin, good and bad, exciting and mundane in a warm and inviting way.
I could not put this book down, read it in two days!
Can’t wait for her next adventure!
  • This book is such a great read. Here you will find birth stories, family drama, and beautiful scenes of India travel. The author's descriptions of the sights, sounds, and smells of India are so descriptive you can see what she sees. Just as I thought it was just a sweet travel memoir, there is a twist and a surprise. No spoiler here - go read it for yourself.
A excellent first novel. Can't wait for this author to write another one.
